Yesterday evening I got home from work, settled down at my computer to check
my mail, and noted with some curiosity that the power was off, which I hadn’t
remembered doing the night before. (I generally leave my PC running
overnight. It’s not that I enjoy consuming more power than nescessary, it’s
because I often start renderings overnight, and I’m just in the habit of
leaving it on.)
Anyhow, I hit the power switch. And nothing happens. Curious.
I check the power cables, wiggle the cords, and since I usually leave my
computer open anyways, I give it a quick inspection inside to make sure there
are no overhanging electrical cables sparking and writing around.
The lid of the case starts to get warmer, and warmer… so I figure it would
be a good idea to take the piles of papers I have laying on top off and store
them someplace better, and as I’m doing it, while my hand is still on the
machine…
BOOOM! My power supply explodes, scaring the bejesus out of me, and blue
acrid smoke pours out the side, smelling of ozenol or bug repellant.
It was really cool!
I bought a new case this afternoon and I’ve got my
computer rebuilt enough to get onto the net again. There’s still a couple of
minutes work left to be done on it, and then I’m going to write a -very-
nasty letter to the case manufacturer. (Provided I ever find the name of the
company.
It’s not written anywhere on the case.)
