Among other things in the “I can’t beleive I packed this” file, which is starting to get pretty full as I unpack the last of the things I have still in boxes, is this:
It’s the ticket to a (formerly yearly) rave at Carleton University that I died my hair Green for and went to with a bunch of friends. I think it’s one of the most clever pieces of design I’ve ever seen, actually, and that’s why I’ve kept it these past few years.
The rave was pretty cool. If you didn’t count the 2 hour long lineup in freezing March temperatures (some people never got in), the multiple fire alarms, the cop who got beat up, the ticket oversold tickets, the tiny spaces for dancing and the dismally inadequate water supply.
There wasn’t a lot of opposition when they decided to never, ever, ever, let the architecture students throw another rave on campus.
The whole concept of the thing was kinda neat though… as you entered you had to go down a long “birth canal”, and there were these sorta “fallopian tube” hallway designs…. and the music was terrific. They had Taiko drummers, guys they’d flown up from all over, these weird leather-clad freaky shows going on in the main room…
It was a really cool experience, either way. Not something I’ll probably do again, but cool.
