So I was reading the National Post from last Friday, and I think it was A6 or
A8 or something had this article about these super-brilliant science geek
kids who won a bunch of awards for inventing a new star-tracking system, some
kind of DNA splicing technique, and all kinds of things.
So, it was all very hoity-toity about how Canadians are producing all of
these genius private-school kids because of our fantastic way of life, which
is to say that these were all kids of rich people, and probably children of
scientists who helped them quite a bit with their research projects.
Next to that article, on the facing page, was a story about how the
government is giving millions of dollars to northern communities to help get
the kids to stop huffing gasoline.
Haves and have-nots?
I almost don’t think it’s so much an issue of money and handouts as much as
it’s a cultural issue. I don’t understand the complexities of the situation,
but I sure wish I did so I could help or something. Why aren’t the kids up
north making star-tracking software and splicing DNA?
