I went this evening to check out Manitoba’s Taiko Drumming group, Fubuki
Daiko, in their first full concert in Winnipeg in over two years. They were
incredible. Live Taiko is always so much better than listening to it on CD,
because of the showmanship of the players. It really is more like a martial
art than a performance. And are the players ever built. Holy cow. The lead
girl Naomi Guilbert has biceps the size of my head. I guess that’s what
happens when you spend hours every day smashing a heavy mallet against a
great big hollow slab at head level.
I ended up buying thier CD, and it’s a pretty good recording (especially with
the help of a good subwoofer) but still, it’s -sooo- much better to see them
live.
If you have no idea what I’m talking about but you’re a little curious about
Taiko, rent Ring of Fire at a video store. It was an IMAX film about
volcanoes that occasionally jumps back to a huge Taiko group banging away at
drums.
