Lunar Bovine – Jason Cobill's Weblog

Not enough pictures

So, I’m tearing my site all apart and re-building it on a new webserver in
the next few days, and I’ve been putting quite a bit of thought into what I
want this site to be, and where I want to go with it.

I’m open to some suggestions… to be honest I still haven’t decided what I
want to put here. A new look would help, but the content is what I’m having
trouble wrapping my head around.

There’s a couple of things I’ve been ruminating about in particular.

  • The Weblog: For the most part, I’m -not- a really forthcoming
person with all of my personal details. A lot of people call this site “My
little diary”, which kindof freaks me out, because the stuff I post on the
site has very rarely got anything to do with anything important happening in
my life, and I’d hate to think that someone out there has the impression that
people compaining about my shoelaces is really bothering me. :) I tend to
just post the silly stuff. I also don’t like writing about other people on
here (although I’ve had four girlfriends through the course of keeping this
log, Eiko’s the only one who’s ever asked me to link to her site) because
it’s kindof an invasion of their privacy. I -can’t- write about work, because
everything I do is under 15 pages of non-disclosure agreements and
technically I haven’t seen or done anything until the film comes out. :) I
can post reviews of things now and then, but frankly, not many of the people
who I know read this site are in Winnipeg very often to see plays, and I
don’t figure it’s too difficult for you to get movie reviews from anywhere
else. So maybe I’m just adding cruft to the net. I know people -like- the
cruft, so I’m considering keeping it up.
  • My Journeys: I’ve been pretty lax about posting up details of my
trips. :) In fact, it’s been about a year and a half since I’ve posted a
travel picture in that section. I’ve been toying with the idea of having a
map, but seriously… isn’t it a bit arrogant or something to have a “Here’s
where I’ve been, sucks to be you!” map on my page? :) So, I’m not sure where
to go with the journeys yet. (It’s funny that my Toronto section is like
three pictures long of me driving through, when I ended up living there just
a few months later. :) ) Either I’ll go full out and make you see all 400 of
my pictures of the desert, or I’ll do some kind of collage amalgam flash
thing with them all, or I’ll just give it up entirely, because who wants to
    look at travel photos? :)
  • Pictures of Me: I caught myself saying something stupid the other
day, and I still feel embarassed about it. A girl came over by my desk and
was talking with me, and I was updating my site at the time, and she’s
like “Oh, you have a website!” and I was like “Yeah! Look! I have pictures of
me!” and started clicking on the ones of me in Utah, and me in a snowbird
jet, and stuff… and then I thought “I’m the most incredibly vain person
ever!” and shut down my browser and was like “So, tell me about your day…”
Do I need more pictures of me? Am I really that good looking? :) Heh. I
suppose it’d be nice for people to see my face on the site now and
    then.
  • My Links: You know, a funny thing happened in the past few
years… I’ve kindof settled into a pattern of only looking at 10 or 15
sites. I sometimes look up pictures of spaceships or something for personal
projects, but… yeah. The links haven’t changed in a while because I don’t
really read very much on the net. I’m not going to tear them down or anything
(in fact, I can think of a few things I’d change there) but I just made the
observation a few days ago and thought I’d share it. :)
  • My Portfolio: It’s sorta funny that the whole reason I built the
site in the first place, as a portfolio for the work my “company” did, has
taken a complete back seat to everything else. I don’t even have a link to my
portfolio stuff, and my resume is nowhere to be found. After I got my job at
Frantic I just didn’t really need it there anymore. People used to like
looking at it though, tests of ninja turtles lip-synching, a singing William
Shatner animation, and some weird little flash experiments (I nearly got that
interactive messenger working) and I kindof miss working on projects like
that in my spare time, but the problem is twofold: I have very little time to
do those things anymore, and when I do work on things, I render them out at 2
or 4K resolution or play them through my TV or something, making it annoying
to make them downloadable over a slow site. :) Maybe I should make a
videocasette weblog. :) Or a DVD. :) Heh. But I’ll try to stick some stuff
online for you guys to look at. I’m just less excited about posting half-
finished work now that I’m a “professional”… and doing anything really
snazzy looking takes a lot of time.
