I finally caught the new James Bond movie “Quantum of Solace” with my Dad and brother and it was worth waiting for – the movie was awesome. The action sequences were amazingly well put together and the filmwork was stylish and innovative. It’s a study in slick pacing and exciting visuals. I can’t say enough about the opening car chase scene. I was pointing out to some friends that you rarely actually see the cars – it’s all closeups of squinting eyes and white knuckles and machine guns. The fight on the rooftops is also brilliant, ending in a Rube Goldberg-ian action contraption that blew my mind.
As is typical of James Bond movies, I enjoyed myself despite having no idea what was going on most of the time. Some Bolivian utility company is being evil. The creepy guy with buggy eyes is bad, but like all the rest of the Bond movies, the intrigue kindof goes over my head. You won’t be totally lost, but the “evil thing” the bad guy is doing is a subtle bit of implausible engineering… no giant lasers or nuclear submarines in sight.
I kindof miss Q and his laser watches, customised Aston Martins and explosive bubblegum. I know the invisible car was a bit of a stretch, but even Jason Bourne had some toys in his gadget bag. Daniel Craig drives dusty old trucks and wears tuxedos covered in dirt. Put a phone in his shoe or something!

Really? I thought this one was actually a little short on the action compared to Casino Royale, but there was much more of the intrigue, especially involving M actually shown in this movie. Not typical Bond, but interesting nonetheless. If you want to see some awesome spy action, check out Alias the TV series. The title character actually is not my ultimate spy, but her father is–Jack Bristow, who Adrian has nicknamed “McScheme-y”. Much intrigue, which I actually prefer because it keeps my mind busy
