Orthodontic Nomenclature

March 19th, 2009 · 1 Comment · Observations

So I survived another visit to the orthodontist. My teeth are on the move again and I’m back to soups for a day or two while I go through the worst of it. So far not too bad, but I needed an advil after supper to recover from eating cake.

It occured to me while I sat in the chair that, while for the most part I’m fairly relaxed while I’m in there having various bits of equipment installed in my face, it would go a long way towards taking the edge off if maybe they changed some of the vocabulary they use in the office while they’re discussing my teeth like I’m not there.

I got to experience “The Grinding Tool” yesterday, basically a Dremel for in between my lower teeth to shrink them down a hair (actually painless, but lots of horrible tasting tooth dust). Then they put a “Chain” in (made of rubber) to help pull some of my lower teeth tighter, and then we talked briefly about “Appliances”, which belong in your kitchen and not in your mouth.

Nearly done. :) Down to 4-week intervals between appointments.

Makes me think of the “gouger” in the Simpsons episode where Lisa gets braces…
