Boom Blox

I’ve been really enjoying playing Boom Blox since picking it up a few weeks ago. I like that the overall game is relatively simple (Most of your time is spent throwing baseballs at stacks of Jenga bricks) but that with just a few block types they’ve made some really interesting and complex puzzles that are solvable in multiple ways. As a creative person, I like that the game lets me find my own way to clear an obstacle, and that the interactions with the bricks can sometimes cause unexpected results.

Some of the puzzles suffer from a bit too much faith in the Wiimote’s accuracy – there are a couple of jenga-like levels where I invariably put a brick through some structure after painstakingly building it up, toppling everything, because my Wiimote hiccuped. Or spots where you have to pitch your baseball through a tiny hole that your reticle never quite wants to lock onto.

The characters are cute! I like the stylized blox critters who roam around and wail when you topple their towers. I’ve put a few legions of them onscreen in Edit Mode and let them have at eachother, and it’s pretty fun to try and predict the winners. The themes are neat, too. They have a really neat set of castle levels that are a riot to mess around with.

Yeah, Anne Marie and I picked this up a little while ago after a friend of mine from work lent it to me. It’s pretty awesome fun. Some of the multi-player levels are very cool. There’s a bunch of four-player levels where you each have a big brick castle, and you take turns hurling bowling balls at your neighbor’s castles to destroy them.
