Positive Reviews

April 6th, 2009 · No Comments · Review

So my dad accused me of being unfairly negative in my last set of movie reviews – he made a case for “Next” which I’ll grudgingly concede was based on a clever premise, but Starksy and Hutch I’m not bending on.

Just so I don’t get a reputation for being mean in my reviews… a few I’ve liked recently:

Eagle Eye: This one exceeded my expectations, the action sequences were fun and the story moved along at a pretty brisk pace. I saw the trailer enough times on TV to start figuring out where the story was going, but they threw in a few surprises along the way that I wasn’t expecting. Worth watching big – there’s a lot of cool set pieces that they blow up. :) I especially liked a cool Lidar effect they applied in a few spots during the film, no doubt inspired by my work on the XMen movies. ;)

Dan In Real Life: A sweet “family reunion” comedy/drama/lovestory about a widower who falls in love with his brother’s girlfriend – at times really frustrating watching this guy mess everything up, but I’m a big fan of Steve Carell and he pulls it all off in a fun bumbling way. Very enjoyable and cute.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona: Holy moley, it’s unbeleivably sexy. I think it should be illegal for men as old as Woody Allen to make movies with gorgeous ladies in love triangles. Woo. I’m feeling dizzy just thinking about it. It makes me want to go to Spain and find a statue just so I can use the line from the film on random ladies in restaurants. The Javier Bardem guy is unimaginably slick – if I’d seen this in high school I would have chosen the artistic path a lot sooner.
