John, Ron and I ditched our wives the other night and went out to celebrate pre Comic-Con nerdiness at the Comic Book Shoppe. It’s been a while since I’ve really had the time to peruse around the store and get a sense of what’s new. It doesn’t seem to matter to Natasha that I’ll follow her around ladies’ clothing stores for hours – when it comes to comic books, she won’t get out of the car. (This is less true since she discovered they have cool ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ action figures)
I had intended to pick up a few old comics for cheap, but there were far too many to choose from, and I’m really not that discriminating when looking for escapist fantasy picture books. That’s when I discovered the “100 Comics for $15″ surprise bags – basically a random assortment of whatever they had kicking around for 15 cents a pop. PERFECT! I feel totally like a kid again, where my only viable method of buying comics was through picking up boxes of random titles at garage sales.
I’ve discovered a whole bunch of new stuff I never would have picked up otherwise, lots of unusual art styles and interesting storytelling. The storylines are not always complete, but who needs conclusions anyhow? I’m probably going to be reading these things all summer. (Especially if the weather keeps up the way it has been)
