Canary Melon

Natasha resolved last week to try a fruit she’s never had before, so while we were out at Produce Depot I took a stroll down the “weird fruit” aisle. I passed over the Red Bananas and Casabas and went straight for the Canary Melons, which are nearly fluorescent yellow when ripeĀ  and looked exciting.

Not really knowing what to expect, we chopped it into arcs like we would a honeydew, and scraped the seeds out with an ice cream scooper. Do this in a place where you can control the buckets of juice that pours out of the thing – it’s nearly as wet as a watermelon.

It’s delicious! You eat the white part right down the the rind. It’s texture is similar to a watermelon, and there’s a hint of watermelon and honeydew in the taste. Really good summer food, very sweet and desserty.

Apparently it can be hard to pick good ones – go for heavier ones with bright yellow skins.

great taste, fun to grow, picked one up at walmart last year…. saved the seed, they grow really well. Now eating my own homegrown, taste is just as good as storebought.
