Some mornings I put my bike helmet on a little earlier than I need to as I’m getting ready to leave the apartment. It’s probably only about two inches thick at it’s widest, but once it’s on I somehow can’t seem to help but bump into things. It’s made me very aware that I am apparently constantly within centimeters of braining myself.
Cupboard doors, the refridgerator, doorhandles, every time I bend down to tie my shoes… and most often when I’m digging around in the heap of bicycles at the bike stand to get at my bike lock – I can’t seem to get out of the tangle without knocking my helmet against a handlebar or two. I know I’m not that clumsy with my helmet off – is the helmet disorienting, or am I always cutting it that close to stuff?

I found the same thing when I first started wearing a hardhat during a co-op workterm. I think unconsciously we have a very good sense of how far our head extends, and so navigate the world with it sometimes a lot closer to objects than we consciously realize.
