While out last night wandering around Richmond with Natasha for an anniversary stroll, we stopped in at Thyme & Again to have a snack and discovered the Exposure Gallery which is just upstairs from all the cake and pies.
A lot of the people I know are investing in fancy cameras and taking photography courses and reading photo books – which is fantastic. I think it’s also important to get out and share your work and see other people’s, which is why these little photo galleries cropping up everywhere are so great. It used to be that to see some contemporary fine-art photography there was only the National Photo Gallery, with it’s weird hours and tucked-away hidey spot next to the Chateau Laurier. Now there’s at least 4 little galleries I know of that host a lot of interesting photo work downtown.
Anyhow – back to the topic. We caught Eamon Mac Mahon’s really intesting aerial images last night at the opening of his show. I’m pretty sure he was there, but didn’t know what he looked like apart from the art schmoozers, so I didn’t get to ask him any questions about his process. I suspect he’s using some kind of large-format film camera, since his images were huge and still pretty crisp. There’s not a lot of room in the gallery for the actual work, but he had 8 or so really large pieces that focused mostly on snowy landscapes and glaciers shot from high above. Some really beautiful work! Interesting perspectives!
