Revved Up Like a Deuce

October 22nd, 2009 · No Comments · Observations

I discovered a week ago while messing around on the guitar that the sometimes unintelligible song “Blinded by the Light” was written by Bruce Springsteen but made popular by Manfred Mann, the same psychedelic pianist who popularized the Exciter’s “Do Wah Diddy Diddy“, Bob Dylan’s “If ya gotta go, go now” and the completely bizarre “Quinn the Eskimo“. I’d gone on a Manfred Mann youtube bender a few years ago but never made the connection to Springsteen before.

This kick-started a powerful Baader-Meinhof phenomenon: Everywhere Natasha and I go now, Quinn the Eskimo is playing. We’ve heard it at Superstore over the music system, in Carlingwood mall, twice in the car, it came up randomly in our iTunes library two days ago, and yesterday afternoon they played it over the internet broadcast of Oldies 1310 with the preface that it was Manfred Mann’s 69th birthday.

So Happy Birthday, Manfred Mann – your crazy music is stalking me everywhere I go. :)
