Grandicrocavus Viasesamensis

June 30th, 2010 · 2 Comments · Observations

Zoologist Mike Dickison (PHD in Giant Flightless Birds) sets out to discover “What, if anything, is Big Bird?” with the insightful eye of a scientist. I think he’s got enough material to talk for ages, really – is the Grandicrocavus species co-dependant on Snuffalupagi? So many questions yet unanswered!

ISS Photo Success!

June 28th, 2010 · No Comments · Observations, Ottawa, Photography

I managed to compose a much better picture this evening thanks to having a bit more light to work with at dusk. The ISS didn’t stand out as much against the light sky, but at least now you can see that it drew a clear sharp line as it descended into my neighbour’s yard. [...]

Post-Earthquake Weirdness

June 28th, 2010 · 1 Comment · Observations, Ottawa

I wouldn’t say I was traumatized by the big Ottawa Earthquake on the 23rd – in fact I found it really rad – but ever since we had a good shake I’ve become hyper-aware of ground tremors.
You’d think stuff stays pretty stationary most of the time, but that doesn’t seem to be the case at [...]

Space Station Flyover

June 26th, 2010 · No Comments · Observations, Ottawa

I was lucky to catch a (blurry) photo this evening of the ISS flying over Ottawa as it does a couple of rare orbits across the night and day line of the earth (the terminator). As it goes over us in the dark, it’s still in the light of the sun, reflecting super brightly. Here [...]

Never Give Up!

June 18th, 2010 · No Comments · Observations

After having a chance to cool off a bit and re-evaluate the garden situation, I felt like I’d been a bit hasty in declaring the garden a failure. I checked the growing time on some of my seed packets last night, and a couple of plants seemed like they may yet be harvestable this season [...]

Hungry Little Monsters

June 17th, 2010 · 2 Comments · Frustrations

Gardening isn’t going exactly as planned. We had a fantastic enthusiastic labour-intensive kickoff with lots of healthy seedlings going into well-prepared dirt. For the first few weeks things were growing well, our beans were about to fruit and our squash were flowering. And then suddenly with all the rain the pest population exploded and now [...]

Dragonboat Sponsorship

June 15th, 2010 · No Comments · Observations, Ottawa

So the original dragonboating prize-pack I had in mind didn’t materialise in the way I’d hoped, so I’ve thought of something way better:  Sponsor me for my dragon-boat race this weekend and I’ll compose an epic song about you detailing your incredible awesomeness. It will even contain an assortment of rhyming words!
Sponsor me here!
Your sponsorship [...]

Sloan at Westfest

June 14th, 2010 · 1 Comment · Observations, Ottawa

It surprises me how many people still haven’t heard of Westfest. Westboro’s clever new business development association reacted to a huge street & sewer repair debacle that nearly wiped out a number of businesses on Richmond by throwing a huge yearly street party. It’s getting pretty massive.
This year’s Saturday night headliners were Sloan, who [...]

Floppy Drive?

June 11th, 2010 · 3 Comments · Observations

I just discovered (after months with this machine) that my Dell work computer has a floppy drive. I guess I’d seen it before and just assumed it was a decorative faceplate or something, but this morning it made a noise while the computer was polling drives and I looked up at its green blinking light. [...]

Dirty Bird

June 8th, 2010 · No Comments · Observations, Ottawa, Photography

Be on the lookout for this little feathered hooligan, going around from neighborhood to neighborhood taking baths in people’s backyards. (In my replica roman rain chalice! The nerve!) I snapped a couple of pics of him making a mess before flying away.

This is actually how I take a bath, too. Stand up on [...]
