Corktown Footbridge Tradition

There’s a weird and sortof amusing tradition that’s begun around the Corktown Footbridge across the canal – romantic couples leave combination locks attached to the handrails. While it’s probably a nightmare for maintenance workers, it’s a unique landmark, and pretty fun to read the creative messages written on their sides and backs.

  1. This practice is quite popular in many parts of Europe. We’ve seen such bridges in France, Croatia and Italy. Couples will write their names or initials on the lock as a symbol of their everlasting love. Like really sweet, heavy graffiti.
