Although we’d already been meaning to stop by the Agriculture Museum sometime soon to check out the alternative energy display, when I discovered this afternoon that they were having an ice cream festival I knew we had to get in the car and go right away.
If they were standing around giving away ice cream I’m [...]

I couldn’t resist hopping off the bus at the Experimental Farm to snap a real-life example of a phyllotactic spiral. Then I missed the next bus, chasing bees around with my camera. I still managed to make it to work on time!

Ugly Ducks
August 2nd, 2011 · No Comments · Ottawa, Photography
Along the Rideau River just behind Carleton University, by the south point of Vincent Massey Park, you can often spot a pair of hideous deformed ducks swimming about. Life is cruel – they would have made a handsome set of swans.

Jay on a Hot Tar Roof
July 18th, 2011 · 1 Comment · Observations, Ottawa
My dad and I demolished and then re-built the roof of my back shed Sunday afternoon, which was probably poor timing on my part due to the ongoing heat wave and the sudden onset of a crazy storm that snapped trees all over the neighbourhood and blew down the Bluesfest Stage.
Luckily, we had the last [...]

Happy Canada Day 2011

Parliament Hill was a bit of a zoo this year – just me and 300,000 of our closest friends. There were actually only 8 folks I needed to account for, a fun gang of visual effects alumni who all happened to be on the east coast at the same time. Although we ended [...]

New Ottawa Humane Society Building
June 28th, 2011 · 4 Comments · Observations, Ottawa, Winnipeg
Natasha and I paid a visit to the new Ottawa Humane Society Building on Hunt Club to make some new friends, and the facility is tremendous! Big open hallways, a green exterior, and lots of communal play areas for the animals make it a huge improvement from the old building on Preston.
When we first pulled [...]

Question Period: The Musical
June 27th, 2011 · No Comments · Observations, Ottawa, Review
In Winnipeg the Fringe Festival is a big deal – Natasha and I joined the throngs of people wandering the exchange looking for fun and interesting independent performances. That is until the awful day I gave into one of Natasha’s ‘audience participation’ picks, and got called up on stage and made to do dog tricks [...]

Baby Loves Bollywood

A big congratulations to Natasha for busting a move at the “Carnival of Cultures” downtown over the weekend, flawlessly performing her Bollywood dance routine with the dance group she joined just a few weeks ago.
They had an enormous stage set up and a pretty prime location at city hall, but with almost zero [...]

Lederhosen Lucil (and Krista Muir)
May 9th, 2011 · No Comments · Ottawa, Review
Saturday May 14th, Montreal’s amazing ukulele-playing folk-rock performer Krista Muir is going to be in Ottawa at Raw Sugar as part of the launch tour for her new album “Between Atoms!”. Not only will she be joined by the dashing Jesse Dangerously (who strangely keeps touring with unrelated artists I like) – but her alter-ego, [...]
