I went out with the guys to watch “Immortals” for John’s birthday, and I have to admit that I was really blown away!
I was already a huge fan of director Tarsem from some of his previous arty-fantasy films, so I knew what to expect: Eiko Ishioka’s absurdly overwrought costumes, hyper-stylistic filmwork and brain-melting settings. What [...]

Ferrofluid

I think this video of ferrofluids roaming along the edges of bubbles is one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen. Way to go, Kim Pimmel. Totally blown away.

Edit: Darnit! Kert beat me to posting his excitement about this by a little under an hour. I knew he [...]

My Nightstand
July 10th, 2011 · 8 Comments · Observations
I’m super proud of my Algonquin College Woodworking II nightstand project, because I built it pretty much from scratch using raw lumber (basically logs) and it turned out pretty well! With a bit of stain and some fancy knobs I’ll have a nice piece for the guest room.
There’s no nails used at all in the [...]

Lederhosen Lucil (and Krista Muir)
May 9th, 2011 · No Comments · Ottawa, Review
Saturday May 14th, Montreal’s amazing ukulele-playing folk-rock performer Krista Muir is going to be in Ottawa at Raw Sugar as part of the launch tour for her new album “Between Atoms!”. Not only will she be joined by the dashing Jesse Dangerously (who strangely keeps touring with unrelated artists I like) – but her alter-ego, [...]

The Go! Team in Toronto
April 13th, 2011 · No Comments · Observations, Review
I took a train to Toronto this past weekend to catch The Go! Team in concert. I’m a big fan of their noisy, multi-layered, upbeat music and I knew their show was going to be something special. I also figured that, since they’re from England and don’t make a lot of visits to the colonies, [...]

Zodiac by Neal Stephenson
March 1st, 2011 · No Comments · Review
One benefit of being sick all last week was that I had a chance (between naps) to catch up on some of my reading. Based on a half-recommendation from Greg (I think he suspected I’d already read it) I powered through chunks of Neal Stephenson’s Zodiac early in the week and, like the rest of [...]

The Princess Bride (The Book)
January 11th, 2011 · No Comments · Review
I’ve been writing a lot of negative reviews lately, and it’s not for lack of trying. I just find I’m reading and watching a lot of underwhelming media lately, and even then, in my reviews, I’m mostly skipping the real bottom-dwellers.
One of the few things to vastly exceed my expectations lately was my reading of [...]

My E-Reader
November 15th, 2010 · 2 Comments · Observations, Review
After a bunch of research and deliberation, I finally sprung for a new-generation wireless Kobo E-Reader, and I love it. The prices have come down so much I figure I can stand to take a loss if the Kindle wipes them out, but I was really interested in Kobo’s open-platform philosophy. Unlike the Kindle, you [...]

The Megashark Effect
August 30th, 2010 · 3 Comments · Observations
Came back to the office today to discover some exciting news – over the weekend the little shark game we just released pulled a “Megashark” and leapt out of the water to grab onto the #4 spot on the iTunes app store! There should be a Nerd Merit Badge for breaking the top 10. [...]
